Does my child need any musical experience?
No prior experience is needed. I welcome beginners from about age 4 and build lessons around each student’s readiness and stage of development.
Will students learn to read music?
Yes. Listening, rhythm, keyboard skills, and reading develop together. Students encounter notation early and build toward independent reading by connecting written patterns with music they already understand.
What does practice look like?
For young beginners, practice includes listening and short, frequent visits to the piano. As students grow, practice becomes more structured, with guidance on what to work on and how.
Can adults start as complete beginners?
Absolutely. You’re welcome whether you’ve never played, took lessons years ago, or already play and want to develop new skills.
What ages do you teach?
I teach students from about age 4 through adulthood.
Do you teach adults?
Yes — I welcome complete beginners, adults returning after years away, and experienced players looking for a fresh approach.
Where is the studio located?
My private home studio is in southeast Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Do you travel to students’ homes?
No — students come to my private studio; I don’t hold lessons in students’ homes.
What is an Interview Lesson?
After you request one, I’ll call to learn about the student and answer questions, then we’ll schedule an Interview Lesson where the student and I meet to see if it’s a good fit — this isn’t automatic enrollment. The Interview Lesson is free.
What is Music Learning Theory?
Music Learning Theory is Dr. Edwin Gordon’s research into how people learn music. My curriculum, Music Moves for Piano by Marilyn Lowe, is based on it.
What is audiation?
Imagine hearing a familiar song in your mind even though no music is playing. Audiation goes deeper than that: it’s the ability to hear and understand music internally.
How do we enroll?
Request an Interview Lesson, talk with me by phone, attend the Interview Lesson together, and — if it’s a good mutual fit — complete registration and the studio policy acknowledgment to begin lessons.
